Review: Disney’s Hollywood Hotel at Hong Kong Disneyland

Disney’s Hollywood Hotel at Hong Kong Disneyland is one of three on-property hotels. When we arrived they were just completing the final touches to the new Explorer’s Lodge next to Hollywood Hotel. We decided not to choose Disneyland Hotel since we knew we would not have time to enjoy the space and wanted to get the most out of our time in the park itself.

The Hollywood Hotel is nicely designed in the old glamour of classic Hollywood with some beautiful white and black marble with lots of blue and silver accents theming throughout the hotel. When we arrived by taxi, we checked-in at the front desk. Assuming they would not let us in the room until 3pm, we were surprised that we could already go to our room and drop off our luggage.

Hotel Package

Since we had only 1.5 days in the park, we went ahead and booked a package deal directly with the resort, the “Three Magical Days” Disney Getaway Package which included the following:

• Two nights room accommodation with late check-out at 2pm
• Two days breakfast buffet at hotel restaurant for 2 Adults
• Two 2-Day General Admission Tickets
• Four Park Meal Vouchers
• Two Disney PhotoPass Plus
• One-way transportation to airport for 2 Adults
• Reserved viewing area for parades and fireworks

We did calculate it out and you don’t really get a discount on the food but it was helpful to have some things pre-paid and not worry about scheduling crunch. Breakfast included was worth it and the quality was good. Compared to the bread, cereal and meats at Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong sure knows how to provide an excellent international buffet.

The meal vouchers provided was for either lunch or dinner each day. There are select restaurants you can use them at but we didn’t find it a problem. We also received four snack coupons we could use for ice cream or popcorn at the park. The photopass was nice to have and we made sure to use them on the rides and take some photos in front of the castle. The only negative is that any character dining is not included in the pass.

We also received one additional fastpass as a hotel guests and we decided to use it on the highly popular Iron Man Experience since most other rides were easy to get on with the right planning.

The reserved viewing area for both parade and fireworks is a one-time use offer, weather permitting. We arrived for the fireworks 15 minutes before and we sat at the hub directly facing the castle. Lastly, the transportation back to the airport is a nice offer. We were unable to use it because we had an early flight. However, if you do stay for the full package offering, you can enjoy the pool and resort on the last day, use your late check-out of 2pm and then take the shuttle to the airport.

Room

We booked the Standard room with the complimentary upgrade to Deluxe which is basically level 6 or 7 of the hotel and view of the landscape or gardens. All the rooms at this hotel and Explorers all have the general same layout and the only big differences when you book will be location (floor level and view): Standard, Deluxe, Premium, Sea View.

Upon entering the room, we were greeted with a nice surprise of balloons and a bed runner that said ‘Happy Celebration’. We still do not know if this was a standard thing or an extra magical surprise, but it sure made our day. At the entrance of the room you will find a standard ‘Disney Bathroom’ with a shower/bath combination and large counter and single sink. The toiletries are more minimalistic here than other resorts, but there is a cute set of cups with Mickey ears and inside of the cups includes a shower cap, comb, toothbrush and paste, and vanity kit. The bathroom is well themed with the marble backsplash and art deco wallpaper and dark wood pieces with metals accents.

Back to the hallway you have a luggage storage area with clothing rack and safe. Special themed Disney slippers were also provided above the safe. Below the safe is a mini-fridge which is very handy in the sometimes hot and humid days in Hong Kong. Next to the storage is a nice counter and lovely setup for the coffee and tea set with water kettle. The hotel also provides four complimentary water bottles.

In the main living space, you have your standard setup for a Disney moderate in Florida. There is a standard wooden tv unit with 8 drawers for storage. Next to this is a round table with two chairs. Our room had two double beds and were solid yet comfortable. Between the beds is a nightstand and more slippers. Power outlets could be a little better but the tea and coffee area has two outlets and also the bathroom.  

Dining Options

Chef Mickey offers weekday breakfast and dinner, and weekends including lunch. Breakfast at Chef Mickey was included in our package. The hotel told us two different things about breakfast times. First that we needed to select a time to eat and later we were told to just drop in during opening hours. Either way, both times it wasn’t so crowded that we could not get a seat. The staff brings you to a table and gives you a coupon for a photo op with Mickey. From there you can go to the different food stations and collect your food. Staff comes by to bring coffee but they were scarce with offering more coffee or checking up on you. I had to track someone down to get an extra cup of coffee.

Nonetheless, the food itself was the highlight of this place followed by the beautifully designed restaurant. The food was top notch. What we loved was the variety of food options. It’s a mix of eastern and western fare, a good international blend of items. I was able to eat some sushi, dim sum while my husband partook in the delicious breads and waffles. Once we were done with our food, we took our coupon and brought it to the photo op location at the exit and we took our photo with Chef Mickey. I really liked that this was at the end of the meal and you didn’t have to wait as Mickey visits each table. Do note, if you have a photopass included in your package, it does NOT include character dining photos.

Hollywood & Dine is your grab and go spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s located at the end of the hallway on the ground floor. It’s a cute little spot with some clever artwork depicting Disney characters in classic films. Food is your typical fare that you find at any fast grab and go at Disney, but also offers some wine and beer and other beverages that you can take to your room.

Studio Lounge offers some light snacks and drinks. Prices are quite high for both soda and wine, but the atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing after a day out at the park. It was very crowded our last night and we didn’t want to wait to get in so we went to Hollywood & Dine to grab a drink and go to our room to pack.

Amenities

The hotel provides some activities and standard amenities. You can have your shopping from the parks transferred to the hotel. The daily activities schedule will list what is happening on property or even at the other hotels. There are surprise characters greetings which we did not experience. There are also nightly movie screenings and a game room for kids. The outdoor Piano Pool area was quite impressive although we didn’t have time to enjoy it, we would definitely come back for it. If you have time, you can stroll through the back of the hotel that leads you through gardens up to the water area which gives you a nice view of Discovery Bay and surrounding Hong Kong area.

 

Celebrity Gifts is located next to the lobby where you can purchase resort gear and any last minute items. It was a good size store but didn’t have a whole lot of variety. However, for the basics, it was a very good store and the staff was also helpful.

Shuttle service is provided 24-hours a day with varying pickups every 10-20 minutes. From what I could gather, the large busses also transport cast members to Disneyland where they can then travel on with the Hong Kong MTR. Hollywood Hotel is the last pickup before the Public Transport Interchange (PTI) which is where you get off to enter Disneyland. We never had issues with the busses being full. Another plus for those traveling with strollers, since this is an actual bus not shuttle, you can store the strollers underneath and then enter the bus.

As a Disney Resort guest, you have a special entrance at Disneyland. Keep an eye out for a sign for hotel guests and Magical Access (their name for APs). Although we arrived later and it was still helpful to have this line.

Final Thoughts Disney’s Hollywood Hotel Hong Kong Disneyland

We were really pleased with the hotel and overall guest experience. The themeing is spot on and the amount of Mickey details were incredible. We were also surprised at how small the resort really is so it made everything convenient. Also, the park was not open super early, so we could enjoy breakfast and take our time getting over to the park. This is a huge difference from Shanghai where entry can take over an hour thanks to security etc.

I would also say that this could potentially be a longer stay resort if you want to relax pool side or walk around the area and also visit central Hong Kong. When I saw the outdoor area I felt like this was almost at the Florida resort level. Granted, no full kitchens or food items to purchase expect at Hollywood and Dine, but it could work if the resort expands more.

The style of the hotel isn’t something I completely love, but I appreciate the detail that went into it all and the age of the hotel doesn’t show like some other hotels we have visited. Hong Kong Disneyland will make sure you are welcomed and taken care of and you will definitely find that at Disneyland Hong Kong’s Hollywood Hotel.
